I recently saw an episode of the brilliant US TV series Toy Hunter with the ever-enthusiastic Jordan Hembrough. In the episode Jordan visited a 'yard sale', which was essentially a small group of tables piled high with old toys from one owner. The tables were in the driveway of the person's house and probably half were on the pavement.
This idea of a private yard sale seems such a great one but I'm not sure it's done here in the UK. It may not even be legal to trade on the pavement, I'm not sure. It is so civilised though and would allow a resident to basically empty the loft and move stuff the few steps outside. If its raining the sale can switch to the garage!
Have any of you ever held a yard sale outside your house?
Never held one, but garage sales (as they're known over here) are common enough, especially amongst the expats. When the boys were younger I'd pick up toys for them, esp HotWheels track which was then (and largely still is) completely unavailable here. But they're also good for cheap books, CDs and videos, the odd piece of clothing or houseware. And I still regret not snapping up an actual 1980s video arcade game unit somebody had (mainly because neither owner or self had the means of transporting it). I'm surprised there aren't any around your end, Woodsy.

I agree with Paul, but I'd say that it was a more 1970's thing (I don't know what it's like in big cities), by the 1980's I think the Car Boot sale had replaced Garage sales...also...when we were kids half our toys came from the Jumble sales at the Church Hall or Village Hall, I have popped down to the odd one when I've seen it in the local paper, but they don't have the toys or White Elephant stall they used to, it's all cakes and clothes!
ReplyDeleteHere Stateside - at least here in Vegas - 'Yard Sales' are quite prolific. They're not often referred to as 'Garage Sales' here in this neck-of-the-cactus but if they were everyone would still know what it was. I've never actually been to a yard sale before! It's just not my thing. We do have the largest flea market in Sin City just a few blocks from the house but many years ago they changed their venue and now nearly every stall/position is new product so we stopped going. Besides, the parking situation was crummy.
