Just watching LEVIATHAN on You Tube. I've got it showing split screen on the laptop because I'm blogging too! Never seen this movie before but it stars Peter Weller of Robocop fame and Micheal Crenna, the Colonel in Rambo, so it should be OK. I've seen its stablemates, THE ABYSS and Wotan's favourite DEEP STAR SIX. 1989 was a good year for oceanic terrors. There was also The Rift, which I've yet to watch.
I was beginning to think that sub-oceanic monster movies had sunk without trace until I saw the trailer for an amazing looking new film coming out this year. More on that later! But generally do you think that the undersea world holds the same excitement and mystery for film makers and writers as that of outer space? And should the icy wastes of the polar regions be added to the list?
Thanks for the film tips...I have been looking at endless lists of Sci-Fi films lately, trying to find something I have not seen that sounds worth a watch. "Deep Star Six" and "Leviathan" sound like fun and "Rift" too.
ReplyDeleteFew films that I have seen actually take place under water..."The Abyss" and "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" spring to mind of course, and maybe "Sphere" but in my experience it is usually something nasty that comes out of the water that takes pride of place in "watery" films.
I was enjoying the series "Surface" until it got scrapped...it was just getting good too!
Hi Ed, fellow monster man! having seen the whole film now I'd recommend Leviathan. It's of it's time and would have benefited from a bigger FX budget but otherwise it's a decent creature feature. I loved Surface too. Like you say it was really getting going and the glimpses of the sea monster looked superb. Crazy that they pulled it!
ReplyDelete"Hi Ed, fellow monster man!"
