The first is from 1961 and illustrated throughout by Brian Lewis. Although, it's not as thick as an annual, I would consider this the first.
The Supercar Annual from 1962 had artwork by Eric Eden and Jacqueline Dickenson, and stories written by Eric Eden and Sylvia Anderson. The annual had a story arc which involved the experimental rocket, Super-R.
It’s worth mentioning that the TV comic annuals also carried Supercar strips starting in 1962 . Two had Supercar on the cover.
I believe Eric Eden did some Supercar strips and a colour centrespread for a Supercar annual.
ReplyDeleteSorry just reread the article and see you mentioned him!
ReplyDeleteNo problem, Andy.
ReplyDeleteEric did double page spreads for both the annuals inside covers as well as the fronts. One has Supercar flying over a traffic jam in what looks like an American city, and the other shows Mike Mercury scuba diving with Supercar in the back ground.
Great scans. Wonderful artwork. Have been a fan of Supercar since I was a kid and watching it remains one of the more vivid memories of childhood.
ReplyDeleteI tend to refer to books that are not blatant annuals as 'storybooks' so by my reckoning the first was a storybook followed by two kosher annuals.
ReplyDeleteIn the first 'TV Comic' annual to feature 'Supercar' the two strips were drawn by Harold Tamblyn-Watts, with subsequent editions drawn by the strips second weekly regular artist, Bill Mevin.
