Happy Easter everyone. For me, it always brings back a flood of memories of past times with my Parents, now long gone. The holiday was a springtime basket of of mass, egg finding and rolling, hot cross buns, family meals, visiting sisters, picnics on the park and to top it all off, Disney Time on TV! I do still try to keep some of these old traditions going.
What does Easter mean to you and what is it called in your neck of the woods?
Happy Easter everyone!
ReplyDeleteThe Easter Sunday mornings I remember had a faint wiff of Christmas about them with all the carrier bags around containing our eggs. Just like at Christmas too, mum would always give us the lesser eggs to open first, just as at Christmas she would point us to opening the few boring presents first like slippers or fancy soaps on a rope.
The big eggs were always exciting and looked wonderful. My sister and I would always compete to see who could crack their eggs and eat some but reassemble them the best with the foil paper and put them back in the box as if they had not been touched.
Loved hot cross buns at Easter, they were a treat back then, not available all year around as they seem to be now.
I remember getting a box of "Weekend" chocolates from someone one year...oh boy, didn't they half set off a raging toothache that stopped my chocolate consumption in its tracks and I had to suffer it until I could get to the dentist the following week!
Still, all fond memories and good times!
Good topic Woodsy; you make me recall a wonderful time when my brother and I played for hours with our toy soldiers on the carpet in front of our TV (left ON for what seemed like all day to entertain us) while the adults were busy visiting and preparing Easter dinner. No memory of what was on TV, but we had time for an 'epic' play, made even better by the background of a full & busy house.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter all! With the kids grown - and no grand kids, we just go out somewhere. Right now it's 1100AM local and we haven't even begun to get ready! LOL
ReplyDeleteNice memories CS.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember what you used to have for Easter Dinner? Strangely I cannot although I know it would have been something we did not have every weekend, it would have been a treat.
Christmas was always Turkey, and the other great night/day of the year for me was Guy Fawkes night and we always had baked taters and a nice sausagey casserole and plenty of pop and crisps but what we had for the Easter dinners eludes me!
A nice Easter ham was/is tradition in our household Eviled. Like you, I remember hot cross buns showing up only at Easter time as well. Has time 'sped up' for anyone else here? Eviled's mention of turkey dinner made me think how far off Christmas is; yet the way years are spinning by, it seems to be closing in faster.
ReplyDeleteMy memories parallel yours, eviled. My sister and I played that very same game!
ReplyDeleteI remember having some super eggs as a child. I also recall "boxes" of 12 small eggs arranged to be a clock. Remember those? They seemed to be available for a number of years.
Also, I can't recall what Easter Dinner was. How odd. I'm guessing it was something special too, so why can't I remember. I have very vague memories of there being a family get-together (my maternal grandparents and some of my uncles and aunts lived directly opposite on the other side of the street). Maybe we went there for dinner? Puzzling. Anyone got a mind probe handy?
Yes, CS. I feel that speeding up of time too. Ok, some of the actual days seem to last a century! (ouch) But the years go by faster and faster.
ReplyDeleteA teacher way back explained it as being because each successive year forms a smaller proportion of our total age. Like, if you are 5 then a whole year is a fifth of your total age. But if you are 50, well it's a far smaller proportion of the whole.
No idea if that is the reason, or if it's just because we get used to so much and take it all for granted. (shrugs). I think the trick is to make sure to savour things ... to take time to take it all in and appreciate it.
