Woodstock has requested some screengrabs from Edge of Impact to look at the red jet. Philosophic Toad has quickly fired up the dvd and brought forth the goods for us alreadly! Woodstock wondered if the jet bore a similarity to
SWORD Probe Force 3 but I think personally, the resemblance is a little tenuous. It does have a look of Task Force 2 and a little of the Scout ship too though.
This frame is especially interesting as it shows where the jet comes from, the distinctive airframe shape come from the Saab Draken kit - most probably an Airfix one and the extra engines are lifted from the modellers staple, the Convair Hustler.

CONVAIR HUSTLER |
Well I still think it looks like the PF3 so there!
ReplyDeleteI've modelled the Draken a number of times - the yellow chequerboard decal has been substituted onto some of my Industrial Narrow Gauge trains. While the Convair was a favourite of my Fathers - he modelled an Aurora model, many, many years ago.

Sorry another post - I saw in a charity shop this afternoon a space shuttle and (sort of) lifting plane - the silver glider like ship from the beginning of Six Million Dollar Man.
ReplyDeleteThey are intended to be hung from the ceiling and have a battery driven propeller at the rear - they the swing round and round.
Are you aware of them?

This is all getting a bit tenuous, isn't it? If you're going to appreciate a kitbash from 'Thunderbirds', let's do it honestly, and less of this 'Oh it looks a bit like blah blah blah from SWORD/SpaceX, etc.'. Which it doesn't. Not even remotely. It's not even the same red. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteTony - ive not been aware of the 'flying toys' you mention - any danger of a picture ? Lifting body sounds great!
ReplyDeleteShaqui - I do state in the post that the link between the vehicles is 'tenuous', but this blog is essentially about the appreciation of designs like this in a fun way, not an absolute statement that all things in the space world depend from sword/spacex roots. Finding 'interesting' articles to post on a daily basis can be a struggle, so we will have times when its necessary to resort to the more esoteric items.
ReplyDeleteDerek Meddings team used 1/48th scale model aircraft kits from Aurora, Revell and Lindberg, and mixed and matched parts. I think the Draaken is a Lindberg kit from the sixties. Same with the F104 Starfighter body used in several episodes with wings etc from other kits. The Airfix ones would be just a little too small to film as the wires would show. Though Airfix kit parts are used all over the place - the girder bridge and parts of the hovercraft for instance show up throughout Thunderbirds. There are some fascinating articles on the Eagletransporter forum about the use of kits in Gerry's series- http://www.eagletransporter.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14
ReplyDeleteWhatever the influences, they're great screengrabs.
ReplyDeleteThanks, P. Toad.
WOTAN - And if you read my post, you will see I have no objection to the wide variety of posts looking at models and toys from any source - I do like seeing these - but the tenuous 'it looks like a PF2' spoils it, making it seem more like a desperate link. I did say 'lets be honest in the appreciation' - it WAS a good post, without from the PF2 mention!
ReplyDeleteThe tenuous link is my fault guys. I'm a sucker for SWORD likenesses and sometimes I start seeing things! I'm a toy nut, can't help it, feel the need to share it. Just ignore me! Love the Draaken model. Presumably it means Dragon?
ReplyDeleteYep, Draaken is Swedish for Dragon.
ReplyDeleteAnd svärd is Swedish for sword! ;-)
