I just want to cry. I can't believe that this toy has popped out of the woodwork for the first time and I really can't believe I missed the Vectis auction by 1 day! Part of what is billed as 'The Peter J Leonard Collection' (still ongoing) this amazing toy, the SPACE BOAT (pictured below - white boat) part of a wonderful space lot, is clearly either an early version of SCOUT 1 or a later clone. The box and toy are similarly sized as well. I absolutley love it! Please please let it be a blog reader who now owns this beauty? I remember a Peter Leonard from my early days standing at toy fairs in Yorkshire in the 90's. If its the same chap he always had a great selection of Century and JR 21 plastic. Hope he's OK?
The Vectis lot description ran thus:
"Group of Hong Kong plastic Space Vehicles (1) MMF friction drive Space Boat - white, lacks red navigation light, (2) ID plastic Space Explorer with friction drive siren, lacks part of rear tail plane, 18cm, (3) Project S.W.O.R.D. re-entry Task Force No.3 friction drive vehicle - red, with lapel badge and a selection of miscellaneous space figures, c.1960s - otherwise Good to Good Plus including illustrated boxes. Also included is (4) Timpo plastic Starflight Rocket - white, red - Excellent in a Good window box. (4)". Ended November 19th 2009.
I've seen that pierced dome on its back before - on an unbranded plastic military space rover I have below.
It looks like the SPACE BOAT has a hole at the front for firing a missile too, just like SCOUT 1! The red forked motif reminds me of battle of the Planets. Looks like the 'red navigation light' went, which it says is missing, went on the opposite side to the green one present. Now I'm looking at it again it has a NASA lift-off body/ Space Glider look to it as well.
And just what where the "space figures.. illustrated boxes" in the description? LP?
I am going to hide in the broom cupboard and weep.
come forth from the cupboard brother woods, its not so bad! Although it is similar to the Scout, I dont think its a derivative or a clone, it does bear a very close resemblance to that green hovercraft you have - I had one too! I got mine about the same time as SWORD were running - probably between 1969 and 70. The silver space figure on the box on the left is from another X-series rocket that Andrew showed a while back and the little orange guy on the right is Marx. Be strong, big boys dont cry! :-D Besides, there will be two on ebay next week - just watch!
