We have a winner in the Car Booty Competition! Here is the winning entry from Amy:
"Hi there ! Just a quick guess at the competion. I think the toy talked about might be the "Daleks" Cutta-mastic set by Bell Toys (1965 I think). The main clue is the burning smell, the importance of the battery (which i think was the big square 9 (?) volt type - but was it actually included ?) and the fact the Boot sale dealer had tested it, which seemed to spoil the toy. Anyway that's my best guess. Amy"
Several readers were close but Amy was the first correct answer! Well done Amy! You are now the proud owner of the rare JR21 Dart Gun, which will be winging its way to you via Thunderbird 2!
Thanks to everyone who had a bash and a big thanks to Steve of http://www.thunderbirdsvintagetoys.co.uk/index1.htm for creating the competition and donating the fab prize in our very first bloggiversary competition. Cheers Steve and Well Done Amy!
PS. For those interested all 7 clues are shown in the side-bar - when would you have known the answer?
Congratulations, Amy.
ReplyDeleteDid you make up the cryptic clue, Woodsy? Or was it Steve?
That would be Steve. I'm not clever enough for cryptic capers!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the winner! Being a yank I wouldn't have been able to figure it out. Sigh.
ReplyDeletenice one! I wasnt even in the right country, never mind the ballpark!
ReplyDeleteA Dalek ballpark mind! What a laff that would be - a Dalek ref would get the job done! Sending off, forget it, they'd just 'exterminate'and say play on!!
ReplyDeleteNews from the Winner, Amy!
ReplyDeleteHi Paul, Thanks for the great news ! I can't believe my luck ! I actually owned one of the "Dalek" cutta-mastics once (found it in an old toyshop outside Bristol in the very early '70's - sadly the toy - and the shop- are long gone now !), which helped with the clues and my memories ! Thanks again for organising such a gerat competition - I'll try and get off a photo like you said for the Website - me and the gun and possibly my S.W.O.R.D. collection in the background ! Please thank Steve on my behalf for donating the prize, and let him know he has a great Website too !I'll drop you a quick note to say it's arrived safely, and needless to say your blog is F.A.B. !
Best wishes,
Amy
hee hee, nice one Amy. Woodsy
Feedback from Arto in Finland:
ReplyDelete" Hi Paul,
what a competition! This was certainly one of the funniest things I've ever tried to solve, the story so well and cunningly written that besides opening many paths for investigation, you really could smell the autumn air and feel the delicious tension just before the Derby market start. Congratulations to Amy yet must admit I could've played along for a little bit longer...
What made it more challenging for me was the fact that, not being a NEC or UK toy fair fréquenté, I have probably never seen or even heard of the item. So I spent a good deal of time just googling my eyes out, trying different options based on the clues given. The first additional clues did not really make it easier, since the information was already there in the story. But believe it or not, yesterday I was looking closely to all things Dalek (which never invaded Finland), yet on a premise based on the delicacy of their telescoping parts.
But it was fun! In these couple of days I have come to learn so much of the scifi toy obscurities that I never knew existed, the most exiting being the Childs & Smith Forbidden Planet Space Ship (wrong decade, I know) featured here http://www.uncleodiescollectibles.com/html_lib/forbiddenplanet/00005.html. Cheers Arto"
Good one Arto, cheers! Woodsy
Hey Rocket Punch! Just checked out the history of Dr.Who in the US - look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who_in_Canada_and_the_United_States
ReplyDeleteDid you ever see marine Boy in the States? I reckon it was the first 'anime' shown here in the UK, back in the 60's. The young manga-esque hero, Marine Boy, had jet boots and chewed oxygum! Totally brill! They should show it again.
I love Marine Boy! I used to watch it in the morning before school. I'm still looking to get a P1 kit.
