LIFE IS LIKE ....

Are there any chocs you dislike at crimbo? I must say I enjoy all chocolates and especially at Yuletide. I even like coffee cremes! 

Weekend were a favourite treat and I loved it when Mum got a box out of the cupboard and opened it up for all on Boxing Day. The green ovoid was spectacular! And the fudge, oh my God! 

Only the lemon slice made me wince. That tart intruder!  In fact I wasn't keen on candied jellies full stop. You?

I remember boxes of chocs like this too, big unbranded things like trays, lying around the place over Christmas. They were square or oblong and contained tons of creased paper cases for the chocs. The single-tray boxes often had flowers pictured or maybe puppies or cats and ribbons. Where did they come from these big unbranded trays?

Without doubt though my number one box was and is Black Magic.

I've asked for a box for my 60th next Wednesday. I cannot wait to chomp into the ginger jelly again! Its been too long!

BLUE PETER MAKES A BLAKES 7 BRACELET

A colleague at skoo mentioned this today so I thought I'd post it in case you recall it. It means nothing to me. Blue Peter makes a Blakes 7 bracelet in June 1983.

THE TOM SWIFTY

I've always been interested in figures of speech - you know, metaphors, alliteration and all that - so I was mightily amused when I came across the Tom Swifty.

The Tom Swifty is named after the space adventure books featuring Tom Swift by Victor Appleton II, like the one shown:

The Tom Swifty seems to me to pay homage to the dering-do of these books and at the same time parodying them.

An example would be: "We just struck oil!" Tom gushed, the oil and gushed making the pun work. Another I like is "We must hurry" said Tom swiftly! ha ha. This even puns on his surname!

SNOW ON THE TELLY

Whilst checking for missing Christmas baubles I found our old portable black and white telly in the attic. A right blast from the analogue past!

It has a massive curved glass screen and huge behind, all topped off with an Area 51 style aerial! Classic three-channel heaven!

I turned it on hoping for an episode of Thunderbirds or Marine Boy for Christmas but all I got was snow!

Which Christmas TV programme would you liked to have seen on this old telly?

The Music Box Steps: Laurel and Hardy's Location

Hi Woodsy,
While looking up Bronson Cave location (the Bat Cave) last month, I came across another short video by same the team, this time on the location of the steps used in the classic Laurel and Hardy short The Music Box (1932). 

In this they had to carry a piano up a very long flight of steps. The clip shows the steps as they are today, with a lot more foliage along the sides - when Laurel and Hardy filmed at the site it was much more open. 

Part of the Oddity Odysseys series, which looks interesting.
