Woodsy and Gang,
Here's another batch of concept art that I've been culling from the Web for Moon or Mars Base constructs.
As I'm no modeler, my thoughts these past years have been along the lines of: how can I make a credible Moonbase with the toys I have? That gets tricky when considering I have toys and figures in a variety of scales.
Figures go from the diminutive SpacEx figures to the Ajax & Archer 60mm-70mm range. There's Airfix and HG toys in 45mm; Marx and MPC in 54mm; and MPC 60mm ringhands.
And, the accessories that come in the various playsets are all over the place when it comes to scale, but I think I'll leave that discussion for a separate mail.

That's a lot of moonbase building inspiration Ed.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the scale differences, you can put the larger scale figures/toys in the foreground, with the smaller ones further from the camera/viewpoint, to create 'forced perspective' and give your model greater apparent depth.
Thanx Mish! I could fill a hard drive with just space related stuff. The forced perspective idea is good. Another point is that many of the accessories that came with Marx playsets were far smaller than the figures and would fit quite nicely with SpacEx. I'll send Woodsy some photos to illustrate the point.
DeleteI had no idea the concept of a “Moon Base” was such an inspiration to so many artists - wow! SFZ
ReplyDeleteYes! AND there continues to be annual contests held by prestigious institutions to bring ideas to the fore.
DeleteFab gallery Ed! Thanks! The moon base concept is close to human hearts. We all look up and wonder, what would it be like to live on our glowing neighbour. One day .....
ReplyDelete...and sometimes we look through eyes tired of life here on the Big Blue Pearl wanting something better!
