This strange construction is the capped entrance of a cold war two-man underground shelter not too far from Moonbase.
A sobering structure to say the least, it sits on top of a ridge commanding superb views of a big sky.

This brought back a weird memory. As a kid growing up in Connecticut, a friend one day took me to an abandoned field behind a local golf course, and he went to a metal hatch in the ground, and with some tools we removed the rusty padlocks, and with our flashlights went down the ladder, and lo and behold, we were inside an abandoned missile silo! The main silo itself was filled with icky liquid, a combination of rain water and lubricant i imagine, but there were decrepit control panels on the sides, and we pilfered some artifacts from these as souveniers. Much later, I read that there was indeed a missile silo where we lived, which created some controversy because it was constructed by the military against the town fathers' wishes! When I think about it now, I'm just thankful neither of us tripped and fell into that deep, deep well, because we would have never been found!
ReplyDeleteGood Lord Zigg, that's quite a tale! Talk about intrepid young urban explorers! You even had tools! Its like the start of a great horror film. What sort of artefacts did you haul out? Or can't you say?
DeleteMy old primary school in Shipley still had WWII bomb shelters around the perimeter of the playground into the 1970s. They were sealed and we never went in them, but they were still there, perhaps because of the ongoing Cold War threat of nuclear attack.
ReplyDeleteWhen I visited the school with my son in 2012, they had gone, as had the wooden outside classrooms, added for larger numbers of children, in the 1960s.
ha ha, I read this whilst staying in ... Shipley! Talk about coincidence! Probably a good idea to seal underground shelters near a playground. The thing I notice about Shipley and the hills of Thackley are the phone masts and pylons. Its bristling with them!
