Following on from my previous Product Enterprise Supercar post, I've always liked the Gold Key comics, well, if I'm honest the covers really, as they are nearly always a case of style over content. I have quite a few in my collection, and only collect the ones featuring my favourite classic TV series.
Following the success of Supercar in the United States, Gold Key struck a deal with A.P. Films' merchandise director,
Keith Shackleton to publish a series of Supercar comics in return for UK publishing rights for a number of American TV shows, in particular Dr Kildare which was released as a pulp paperback in the UK, which sold remarkably well considering the story wasn't exactly Shakespeare, but it did feature a photo of Richard Chamberlin on the cover.
TV Century 21 and Lady Penelope comic also benefited, with both publications featuring several popular U.S. TV series, amongst them Burke's Law and The Man from UNCLE.
Solo and TV Tornado didn't do badly, either.
Supercar featured in four Gold Key comics, along with a single issue featuring Fireball XL5.
Lovely 'pulp' fiction style covers Scoop.
ReplyDeleteColourful and dramatic.
The covers do draw you in, but the artwork inside could be better! : D
DeleteI love the covers of Gold Key Comics! I'm not well versed enough to identify these Anderson artists, but here's a great blog about one of them...
