Hi Woodsy.
Saw a new toyline in the local toyshop this week from the upcoming Disney Pixar CGI science fiction animated movie 'Lightyear' that is due out in June.
The movie is about the Buzz Lightyear character from Toy Story but in the film he is a 'real' astronaut rather than a toy.
Supposedly it's the 'real' science fiction movie that Andy in Toy Story watched that made him want a toy Buzz. The trailer has the great Bowie Starman track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwPL0Md_QFQ
Anyhow, Mattel have brought out tons of toys from this movie and as well as figures and robots in different sizes there is a range of 6 to 7 inch size spaceships in their Lightyear Hyperspeed series -the XL-01, XL-02, XL-07 and XL-15 ships, plus a larger Zurg Fighter that is 10 inches long. There are also Lego of the ships coming out too.

The ships remind me of a cross between Star Wars and the Project Sword Re-entry Task force series.
Given the popularity of Buzz Lightyear toys, hopefully the new movie is a massive success and space toys may be on the way back.
Keep up the great work on the blog.
All the best,
Yorkie.
I love these toys, yep let's look forward to more space toys too, it's also my understanding that Tom Hanks and Robert Zemekis have restarted production the Major Matt Mason movie
ReplyDeleteMattel have a lot of faith in the movie. Just a check on Amazon UK and Amazon.com in America and there are around 50 to 60 toys coming out. The spaceships are my main interest, the Hyperspeed line is very similar to the old Galoob Action Fleet series that are sadly no longer made. They've announced 10 ships in this series so far - new ones coming are the XL-03, XL-09, XL-13, XL-14 and Armadillo transport. So many ships - it's like a whole Project Sword line. I picked up the first 5 from UK toys stores and the sculpting is really good on them. Hopefully the Major Matt Mason movie will get made - it's been in developent hell for over a decade. Anyhow, Lightyear Trailer 2 popped up this week. Enjoy. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHBBoUtJHhA
ReplyDeleteWhat a range Yorkie. There's something Japanese Anime about them too, especially the figures. Its good to see a decent range of space toys and small action figures out again in the shops. Back to the days of Manta Force and yes, the spirit of Project SWORD lives!
DeleteYorkie - where did you hear about the new ships? The 3,9,13,14?
DeleteHi Wotan. US store websites- Amazon.com , Walmart, Target and Entertainment Earth. Apart from the Armadillo, no pictures of these new XLs yet though. Entertainment Earth states out in July.
DeleteApologies, I made a typo, the XL-13 should be XL-12.

Ive ordered the first two on Amazon and bought the second two on ebay. Just need Zurgs ship now! Mattel is one of the best toy makers around, even today, so quality should be assured. They also remind me of the short lived Mattel Battlestar Galactica line from 1978. Sadly, the line was pulled after a child swallowed one of the missiles from a Viper and choked. Although Mattel re-tooled the designs to stop the missles firing, the damage had already been done and the line sank like a stone. The excellent Land raider vehicle only ever saw release in Canada.
ReplyDeleteI thought that there may be a shortfall of products in the UK, so I decided to get in early and buy the toys as soon as possible. There's a nice set of Hot Wheels models coming soon too!
Well done Wotan. I had the same idea. The movie isn't out until mid June. I got mine from Smyths and The Entertainer. Both had most of the first wave apart from the XL-02 and XL-07 which was odd. Got those from Ebay stores- the smaller toy shops seem to have got them. Nothing in the supermarkets yet but there is plenty of time. I've preordered the new ships from Amazon.com (if you have a Amazon UK account you can also order from the US site) just in case, though I'll be getting duplicates of them all anyway once they arrive over here!
ReplyDeleteTalking of Galactica do you remember Joyride Studios Viper and Cylon Raider toys from around 2006? They were around the same Action Fleet size too and were pretty accurate.
Thanks Ray - thats good news indeed. I think Mickey Mouse is going to be relieving me of a lot of cash shortly. I missed the joyride Galactica toys, but I believe they were rather nice.
DeleteSupermarkets seem to suck just lately for movie tie-ins, 3 big stores near me have had zero toy merchandise for The Batman, I can remember Debenhams years ago had a huge range action figures then out of the blue it became an Early Learning Centre!! I recall the only store that had a clue was Woolworths, which if you went to the one in Las Vegas had a gun department just up from the record/video counter!!
DeleteThese look great - I've seen the first of them in The Entertainer and will probably buy some. Incidentally, my local branch is still full of Starlink toys - have you blogged about them? Some great ships, part of a line connected to a failed video game franchise. https://www.thetoyshop.com/brands/starlink
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link Kittenpurse. Never heard of Starlink but I like the designs on there. Was the the toy line that failed or a video game called Starlink? Why did it fail?
Deleteit was one of many hyped up Playstation games that missed the mark. Im surprised it got a toyline, must have had serious money behind it.
