I caught Superman Returns on TV yesterday. I'd seen it before around 2007 but couldn't recall a thing about it. I can remember everything about Chris Reeves' films and Snyder's Man of Steel, which followed Returns some years later but zilch about Returns itself.
I think that's it's problem. Spacey and co create very little action or drama or anything really. It lacks zing. Even the pivotal scene of the new landmass growing in the sea is lacklustre.
I think the final nail is the fact that I don't know the name of the Superman actor. Never a good sign!
Am I being super harsh?
It was a super flop, without the big name backing, it didn't - unlike Superman -take off. Same thing happened with the first Hulk film in 2003, which met with reasonable success, but then sank.
ReplyDeleteA flop eh. I thought it might have been.
DeleteAhh, shuffles feet and stares at the ceiling....
ReplyDelete"I actually worked on that film and it was a very fulfilling experience, sadly not matched by it's box office".
I started off making concept models for the Art Department, doing a lot of work on the Fortress of Solitude and Superman's spacecraft interior. From there, I went on to supervising the construction of Lex Luthor's train set, In fact I hand carved a lot of the Rocky Mountains landscape from polystyrene foam.
I got a pay increase (in fact the last I would see in my career, my wages woyld remain frozen for the next ten years until I retired!)
A film is a joint effort from many people and it's sad when the end result doesn't live up to the expectations you have when doing all that hard work!
A flop?
Maybe in money terms, but I did the best I could (along with my fellow workers) to make it look as good as possible.
No offence intended Looey.
DeleteI bought the dvd, visually, you can't fault it - but in movie terms, it missed the mark. Had it arrived a bit later, it might have caught the zeitgeist better, but as it was, it just didn't seem to do as well as it might
