Tuning into Scoop's 1999 vibe here's something weird I spotted.
This is the Remco Space 1999 Stun Gun toy. Nice. Nothing strange here.
But am I seeing things! Check out this The Force water pistol. Is that similar? The maker, Barton Magic Toy, seems to have reversed the stun gun for their deep-space effort.
What do you think readers?
Here's another bit of Barton magic, the Mean Machine, aimed straight at a bewildered caveman!
Barton weren't alone in the stun gun knockoffery department. Here's the more well-known fake, the Arm's Master seen on Worthpoint! What on Earth is that on the header art? And why Arm's Master? Is that a Space 1999 reference?
As it happens there of loads of Space 1999 toy gun knockoffs, which I would love to see in the flesh. Check out the Catacomb's excellent merchandise guide for a run-down. Have you got any readers?
The Remco and to some degree, the Arm's Master look fine; the others look awful!
ReplyDeleteThere's so many knockoff Space 1999 toys on that Catacombs site Scoop. Lots of stun guns and some even worse than these!
DeleteI had a white plastic version, with colour lights ( one bulb and colour plastic windows) can't recall who made it, but it was quite well made.
ReplyDeleteI had that too, it was by a company called Blue box Red box.
DeleteAHI did a version Wote. Blue Box Red Box Kev? Is that like the compnaies Blue Box and the other Redbox?
DeleteI guess this is my inner Sheet Metal Worker speaking, but most of them remind me of a Pop Rivet gun,a tool that I use fairly often
ReplyDeleteha ha, I wonder of that was the original inspiration Brian?
DeleteI had 3 of The Force squirt guns although they were a pale solid green instead of translucent. I got them from cleaning up the theater after our Rocky Horror shows so I never knew where they came from.
ReplyDeleteI used all three as part of large guns made for a 16mm film project, Televi-Man, a spoof of the Sentai series from Japan. We finished it about 3 months before Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came out on tv. Sadly I pitched the guns when I moved.
But now I know the source of the 1999 knock offs, thanks guys!
Glad we could help Lance! What happened to Televi-Man?
