Two more obscure annuals new to me are these seen in the retro floor of a York charidee shop today.
First up we have the Esmerelda Annual from 1973. I would have been 12 and have never seen this in my life. You?
The second is this Mighty Warriors Annual from 1979. Who are they? Is that cyclops in red? And an R2D2 ball in the right corner? Again, never ever seen this before. You readers?
"Mighty Warriors" looks like a wonderful generic ripoff of various cultural icons, including Tarzan, Star Wars and maybe even Iron Man? Whatever it is, its gotta be cool inside!
ReplyDeleteMaybe that central male figure is more Conan than Tarzan...?
ReplyDeleteYes its a mystery Zigg. Looking it up, there is scant info about its origins but what I have gleaned is that its a collection of 3 adventure stories told in the graphic novel format featuring Solar: Man of the Atom, Magnus Robot Fighter, and Dagar the Invincible. All the artists and letterers etc are listed here https://www.comicbooks.com/product1297614/ Looking at the Grand Comics Database and tracking the origins it looks like one character goes all the way back to 1954 in Spain? https://www.comics.org/issue/518012/
DeleteYou've nailed it, Woodsie! I was wondering if it was a Gold Key Comics compendium!
DeleteCheers Looey!
DeleteI used to buy the Esmeralda weekly comic, even though I was far too old (and possibly the wrong gender) for it. If I recall correctly, she started in a comic called Seven. The Annual cover does look familiar, but I can't remember whether I ever actually had it or not.
ReplyDeleteI was 9 in 1970 when this comic may have begun and I really don't remember it Kid. Checking it on Ebay I love the cover art. The comic Seven you mention is indded stated on the covers of Esmeralda on Ebay. In other sites she's mentioned as the a relative of Sabrina the Witch. I wonder if its the same Esmeralda?
DeleteI have esmeralda album I was 5 loved then love now!
