Do you remember a Seventies paperback called Suedehead?
I think it was about a skinhead. A young lad with a crew-cut appeared on the cover wearing a mac and doc martens I think.
No idea who the publisher was. I never owned it but saw it. It might be an interesting read now!
There may have been others in this series about other yoof sub-cultures. Is that right?
Suedhead, Skinheads, Rockers, Biker, Angels - I had them all read them all and took the best bits to make me! I might still have them somewhere?
ReplyDeleteBiker was the odd one out, as it was written by David Shepherd, future Archbishop of Liverpool! But they were all better than their lurid covers would suggest!

Fab Hugh, you had the lot! I remember seeing most of them in the shops and still see the odd one now at car boots. So Seudehead wasn't about skinheads. What then? Mods?
DeleteCan't remember the distinction now, but they were . . . yeah, a sort of moddish off-shoot skins . . . or was it that Mod's girls' were suedheads? Have to read it again!

There were two American ones, Hell's Angels which was non-fiction, and the outsiders which became a very good movie folloeing the book remarkably accurately for a Hollywood picture!

Fascinating Hugh, I'll check out that film!
DeleteCan't believe you haven't seen the Outsiders Woodsy!

DeleteRichard Allen wrote a number of paperback stories in the early 70s about youth subculture including Suedehead, Skinhead, including several sequels. There might even have been a Glam rock themed book! Pretty much glorifying sex and violence and fashions, as I remember – the books got passed around at school!

DeleteAmazing Charlie! So many books! I love the title Boot Boys! There's even one called Demo! I wonder who Smoothies were?
