It is a pity that the photo of the Thunderbirds rifle is of such poor quality, but this gun seems to be so rare it appears to be the only image there is. The lower part of the grip is hidden by the edge of the box, so it is hard to see the shape. I think the Thunderbirds rifle looks more like the US Army M16 rifle, there appears to be less of a gap between the trigger and the magazine, and the foregrip also seems to be shorter and a different shape. But until a better photo turns up, this is all we have to go on.
I do not have anything on toy guns, and a quick google search did not turn up anything, so I have no idea if Crescent did an M16 or not. There is a picture of the rifle on the box top, below the Thunderbirds name, but this is still not clear enough to clearly identify the gun type. Given the image, I do not think it is possible to say exactly what real type the Thunderbirds gun is based on, only to make suggestions - until a clearer picture turns up, if it ever does. Sorry
I have just seen a more recent post of some old trade toy ads, from Will O. These include a much clearer image of the Thunderbirds rifle, No.202/S. These clearly show that the Thunderbirds Rifle is based on the SLR, or F.N. FAL Patrol Rifle, not the US M16 as I thought. Sorry for getting that wrong the first time round.

ReplyDeleteIs there a Crescent M16 Rifle Paul? Thanks for your observations too.
