Blog reader and contributor Terranova is resident in New York and is a patron of the Society of Illustrators. He recently visited the gallery and sent us this report from the special exhibition, highlighting the work of science fiction artists and illustrators, including blog favourites Robert McCall and John Schoenherr. Terranova reports:
|
Wayne Douglas Barlowe - 'Demon Minor' 2018 |
"The Society always has at least two shows running. They are either the entries to contests or themed as in this case. Members offer items from their collections or the Society uses items from their own collection comprised of art donated by artists/members."
|
John Schoenherr - 'Wings of a Bat' 1966 |
"Needless to say, Science Fiction illustration is often on display. There is no restriction on photography but the art is framed under glass and avoiding reflections from the over head lights is very challenging. On the other hand unlike a museum you can put your eye right up to the picture to view the canvas so the glass has a trade off if you want to observe technique."
|
Michael Whelan - 'Chanurs Homecoming' 1986 |
Michael Whelan - 'Foundation: Hari Seldon' 1986
"As New York City is the center for comic book publishing, about 20 years ago MOCCA was formed, Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. When we moved about 16 years ago I donated a large part of my comic collection to them. It consisted of about 20 cartons of British and US comics. I retained my Eagles, Countdown, The Spirit and others. About 10 years ago MOCCA combined with the Society giving up it's own space and now has the Upper Gallery at the Society so they have a separate exhibit of either comic or Graphic Novels. right now it's book illustration. I try to visit at least once every month."
|
Robert McCall - 'Advanced Space Shuttle' |
"The Society is one of the unsung treasures of NYC much like the Cartoon Gallery in London which is about now moving to a new location. Its where the travelling exhibit of Dan Dare at 50 was displayed."

Boris Vallejo ; 'Morning Envoy' |

DeleteThat space shuttle pic almost looks like a photograph. Excellent.
ReplyDeleteLove the combination of future tech with dinosaurs and sword and sorcery.
ReplyDeleteSuper report with amazing art.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting, Terranova :)
A ravishing thought having such a variety of top illustrators from different decades in one and the same gallery, from classics like Bonestell and McCall through my teenage favourites like Vallejo and Whelan to more recent masters. Thanks for giving us a glimpse Terranova.
