Nasa Cassini Probe is diving between the planet and its bejewelled rings today, before crashing into the atmosphere, one final time. The imagery of the Saturn system has been amazingly beautiful, can't wait to see what this grand finale will reveal!

Yes, it would be amazing to be there to see it crash land on Saturn Bill!
ReplyDeleteI doubt much would actually make it to 'land'.
ReplyDeletePrior to the launch of Cassini-Huygens back in 1997, there was an open internet site where you could leave messages to be taken onboard the probe on a CD disc. Although not a proponent of these kinds of calls at all, this was (and has been) the one I could not resist. So will those messages from all mankind anno 1997 perish as well, or could they perhaps be miraculously preserved somewhere on Saturn's surface (if there is one, that is).
ReplyDeleteYou never know I suppose. The pressures inside a gas giant are going to be huge I suspect. There probably will be a solid surface right inside but I wonder if the liquid beneath the gas wouldn't be a tough enough material to hit at those pressures. I wouldn't be underwriting the insurance on that probe!
