Slang is as much a part of growing up as Milkshakes, spots and Detention. Here are a few dozen slang words and some local dialect I remember [including some naughty ones] from my more tender/ adolescent years in Lancashire, North West England [let me know if any are familar! Your slang welcomed]
- Belm [said with toungue pushing out bottom lip!] - your'e lying
- Skoo - school
- Cally - money
- Laccy band - elastic band
- Clippy - lady dus driver/ conductor
- Sussed/ sussed it out - sorted, figured out [from police term s.u.s - stop under suspicion]
- On the raz - going drinking in pubs
- Joshing/ Tommin - joking
- Fettled - sorted, finished
- Hit the Sack - go to bed
- Dob/ Dobbed - drop someone in it, to tell on someone/ to be dropped in it, to be grassed on
- Clever clogs - smart ass
- Mersey goldfish - used condom [usually floating in a stream]
- Speccy Four Eyes - someone who wears glasses [like me!]
- A,a/ numbers/ biz - poo
- Knockers - ladies boobs
- Chuffed - happy, pleased
- Bedlam - noisy, chaotic place
- Mighty - great [headbanger talk] " Black Sabbath were mighty!"
- Soft - heavy as in metal [headbanger talk]
- Paggered/ shagged - tired out
- Pop 'n' crisps Night - Saturday night
- Big Light - front room light
- Get stretched - no chance
- Get knotted - go away
- Dogs Bollocks - the very best
- Dogs breakfast/ dogs dinner - a real mess
- Pictures - cinema
- Slash - wee
- Kushdi - excellent
- buff/ trump - break wind
- Skids/ skidders - poo stains in underpants or toilet
- Shreddies - underpants
- Wanker - idiot
- Bird - girlfriend
- Moofer - scooter
- Hog - motorbike
- Jostick - incense
- Rec - recreation ground
- Been packed - ditched by girl or boyfriend
- Bowie cut - David Bowie haircut
- Skinners - jeans with a turn-up
- Kick The Can - kick a football and hide game
- Chavvers - boy
- Chippy tea - fish and chips for tea
- Brew - cuppa tea
- Gettin on my tits - really annoying me
- Get - rotten fellow
- Courtin - going out with a boy or girl
- Is it Serious? - going out with a boy or girl for a long time!
- Lugs - ears
- Brass monkey weather - freezing cold
- Pissin down - raining heavilly
- Pissin around or about - messing about and annoying someone
- Talent - good lookin' gals or guys
- Cracklin - same as Talent
- Skint - penniless
- Pitch and Toss - throwing a penny against a wall [game]
- Prannock - annoying person
- Give it some welly/ Give it some rice - get stuck in, go faster, try harder
- clown - fool
- kecks - trousers
- bonce - head
- Snoggin - kissin
- Telly - TV
- Toffees - sweets
- Garby - garden
- Footy - football
- Playin out - going outside to play
- Docs - Doc Martin boots
A lot of that slang mirrors scouse slang from my liverpool home, especially the mersey goldfish!
