BEST SERVED COLD

I caught a newish flick this week on Netflix, A Bad Day for the Cut.

Its essentially a revenge thriller set in Northern Ireland. The Troubles are only mentioned peripherally, as its largely about one ordinary man hell bent of avenging his old Mum's death. I really enjoyed it.

It reminded me of other single-man-on-an-avenging-rampage films and in particular Blue Ruin, an American indie that hosts a brilliant performance from its central beachbum character. 

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is another humdinger of a vengeful flick, starring Clive Owen and I suppose The Punisher himself is the daddy of wrath, especially when played by Thomas Jane.

But for me the best revenge thriller I've ever seen has to be Dead Man's Shoes. Directed by Shane Meadows, it hosts Paddy Considine as the brilliantly played angel of death and Gary Stretch as the bumbling local Midlands hoodlum who leads a bunch of goons. The ensuing tension is transfixing and the images in the film will stay with you a long time.

Another flick I'd like to now track down is Deadbeat by Dawn from 1988.

BILL EV'S BEAUTIFUL BOOKSHELVES

Hi Woodsy, 

here are some photos of my collection of annuals DVDs and books. Quite a few Gerry Anderson publications too. Some are original purchases, some given to me from my late Cousins collection, some are modern acquisitions.

On display are my favourites, unfortunately there just isn't enough space in my main bookcase to display everything. The comics, including the TV21s are stored in a cupboard, as there isn't any more room. In addition to my own collection of books my wife has a big bookcase of her favourite novels: JRR Tolkien, Harry Potter, Book of Dust series, and many others.

Scarily, every one of these books, and the same with Sharon's, have been read several times over from cover to cover. Every DVD has been watched at least four plus times! But it is a collection spanning nearly sixty years.

PYRO MODELS 1972

I saw this catalogue online and thought, yes! I adored those Pyro dinosaurs as a kid in the Sixties, although i thought mine were Revell when I think back. Those illustrations look damn familiar and for some reason I can see a set of Polish stamps too when I look at them. Did you have these models?

When I first started car booting I found a boxed model rifle going for a song and snapped it up. Turned out it was the Silesian rifle shown here, second from the bottom. An amazing model.

FILM NIGHT

Well, its Friday night and work is done for this week. I'm kicking back with a lager and blackcurrant and looking forward to a film night with Blue the Moonbase Mutt.

I've had a break from horror and sci-fi lately and seen a few thrillers, which were:

The Maus - an interesting take on the Balkans war of the Nineties. It uses a deep forest to ramp up the dread and malice that a post-war couple feel when faced with seemingly belligerent strangers. Ultimately, I didn't like it.

The Irishman - a Scorsese marathon of 3.5 hours. if you like Goodfella or the Godfather you should enjoy this mob epic. I'm curiously drawn to the brash world of American Italian gangsters battling it out in the clubs and yards of the States. Exceptional De Niro -Pesci- Pacino triple act, which I loved.

Casino - another mobster maelstrom at 2.5 hours, this time on the Las Vegas strip, as De Niro tries to become the legit King of the city, whilst his best buddy Pesci is busy punching and kicking everyone he meets. A sort of alternate universe sequel to Goodfellas set in the Seventies and Eighties. Again, I loved it.

The Vanished - a thriller starring The Punisher himself, Thomas Jane. It is a punishing movie too as it deals with the immediate aftermath after a child goes missing at a caravan park in America. A strange flick, which I sort of enjoyed.

SPLASHDOWN BUBBLEBATH BY AVON

Hello Woodsy,

Saw Wotan's post on Avon.

Thought I'd finally send this! Near the end of January I took a trip to Tucson Arizona, and visited the Pima Air and Space Museum, among other sites.

I took a picture of this Avon Space Capsule bath toy, and meant to send it much earlier. I have several things to send, but time seems to get away from me lately. 

 This was one of the display cases, and looked like it might have been a fun bath toy. Of course, this now makes me want one, so I will end up trying to find one don ebay sooner or later!

DID YOU HAVE A FANCY KIDS' TOOTHBRUSH?

My Grandson Moonbase Junior has a really cool electric Batman toothbrush.

When I was 4 I don't recall having any fancy toothbrushes, certainly no super heroes and most definately not electric.

just a plain old stiff head brush that made my gums bleed after vigorous rubbing with Gibbs SR or Colgate paste.
