Took some pictures of the free Thunderbird S toy from the recent Thunderbirds Are Go comic. Small model but nicely detailed.
Just for completism, here are some shots of the Vivid toy of Thunderbird Shadow. For some reason, it seems very hard to come by at the moment. It is nice enough but I think the one from the comic is more accurate.
I've always greatly admired the black and white merchandise mastheads, done in pen and ink, that appeared in the pioneering SiG magazine in the 1980's.
So much so that I've had a bash at some of my own too using Paint!
I love Quatermass and have just found this cool site dedicated to the TV series and the films. If you quater with the masses then maybe have a gander here: Ringstone Round.
Although Sylvia Anderson accomplished many things during her lifetime, I imagine she'll be best remembered as the voice of Lady Penelope, and synonymous with FAB 1, Lady P's unique Rolls Royce.
While there's many different toy and model versions of this famous car, I think the 1/18 scale model made by Aimie is definitely a favourite with me. I've covered it before on the blog, but I figure another look won't do any harm.
If you've listened to my latest radio story Sarge: the Golden Astronauts you'll know I've got the underworld on my mind! Looking for other visions of the dark one I stumbled across this You Tube clip from Fantasia, the Disney epic from 1940. Its staggering how modern it all looks, helped immeasurably by being in colour. The winged devil is quite stunning as are the bare breasted harpies [which must have been a problem in 1940] and the imagery is rather scary, especially for small kids! Despite having sold a couple of copies of the soundtrack record album at sci-fi fairs, I know very little about the film but can appreciate that its at the very origins of animation. Do you know the film well readers?
When watching the clip I couldn't help noticing a similarity with the 1978 animated movie The Lord of the Rings by Ralph Bakshi. The Disney Devil could easily be Balrog! Here's a You Tube clip showing Frodo meeting the frog-like Gollum.
and another You Tube clip showing Eowyn facing the mighty Witch King from the different but related animated film The Return of the King released by Rankin Bass in 1980.
To be honest, despite loving the two Lord of the Rings cartoon films I prefer the animation of Fantasia. What do you think readers?
A short video I took at last year's Fanderson convention at Maidenhead. Sylvia touches on UFO, The Secret Service, as well as her thoughts on Lew Grade, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain.
Courtesy of SWORDgrasshopper, here are both box versions of the die-cast 'Captain Scarlet' Zero X by Aoshima side by side. The one on the left with the red sticker is the 'Thunderbirds' version and the one on the right the true 'Captain Scarlet' version.
