Looey's recent comment about an obscurely glimpsed toy on a shelf, named 'Space Safari' has prompted a dusting off of a cool little toy, which I am hoping is the toy he recalls. Made by Miniflex in the mid sixties, it's clearly influenced by Major Matt Mason and other contemporary toys.
Packed neatly into a compact box, we have the Ten Hoof Space Crawlwr, Astro Prime Mover, Lunar Personnel Carrier, Solar Generator and the Computer Motivator.
The Prime Mover can tow the personnel carrier with twin domes and the Solar Generator, which has a rotating screen on the back, displaying a moire effect, not unlike the communicator on Star Trek.
The set comes with three astronauts and a gang of exotic aliens to be gathered up by the safari mission and held in the observational security modules for study.
A great little set all round, with the figures just under 3" high and the Prime Mover at 7" long.
I can't wait to see Looeys interpretation of the toy!
Oh Woodsy! You jumped the gun on this one! Now I'll have to buckle down and photograph my version!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I hoped you'd say Looey! Show and tell! Bill
DeleteLovely post Bill. I never had this set but since seeing it on the blog years ago I've come to appreciate it. Ages ago I had a go at IDing toy parts from other toys in it maybe. A Zeroid arm, Billy Blastoff crawler wheels and so on. I did a post somewhere. A superb set anyway you cut it.
ReplyDeleteWell I don't see any Zeroid parts, but the crawler wheels are deffo very Billy Blastoff. I need to do a companion piece comparing the various crawler wheels! Bill
DeleteHere ya go Bill. From 7 years ago almost to the day! https://projectswordtoys.blogspot.com/2015/12/more-toy-recycling-alps-lunar-explorer.html
DeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteA fun packed vintage set, Bill. Love those aliens.
ReplyDeleteIt's deffo got serious play value Tony. A lot of toy packed neatly into a small box. I recall seeing this in the mid sixties in a home shopping catalogue, next to the boxed Apollo Moon Exploring set. But try as I might, my letter to Santa didn't seem to reach the North Pole! Thank god for ebay, some scant decades later! Bill
DeleteDynamite toy! SFZ
