As my post on the picture on the cover of the new Corgi catalogue is creating a bit of a buzz, here's a reminder of the photos Corgi produced showing their prototype die-cast Stingray.
I can see your gripe about the end of the Sting tubes being squared off. As noted by other Moonbasers, this is probably an engineering choice rather than stylistics. However, given the tubes have to be painted black anyway, a black crescent across the straight line would fix it visually. QUICK! MOUNT A MASSIVE INTERNET CAMPAIN TO MAKE CORGI FIX THEIR PAINTING MASK ON THE STINGRAY TORPEDO TUBES!!!
That would help. I favour a paint job, with a slight curved indent back from the straight edge. But that might make the torpedo tube recess too long. Best if they can just get it right !
Having entered the murky waters of engineering myself, I can understand the trade offs required. The problem is caused by the demands of playability. (I'm actually surprised the Fun Police allowed them to unclude shooting torpedos at all -how quaintly retro of them!) You will just have to settle for this being "toyetic" as opposed to a scale model like the 1999 Eagles.
I'll be getting it anyway as it's the only game in town. However it's 2023 and it's always disappointing when manufacturers still can't get the shapes right. Corgi have made some very good Anderson diecasts but also some awful ones - their TB1, TB3 and FAB1 are just dreadful. Why they didn't just copy the superb original Dinky FAB1 is a mystery. Fingers crossed for Stingray.
Judging by the comments here, and on the Corgi site, the torpedo tube shape is causing a lot of consternation. Will Corgi take any notice? I wouldn't put money on it. Personally, I can do without the firing missiles, but obviously Corgi want to provide some playability, thinking it's just from a children's TV series . I don't know why, as most of the people buying it will be in the fifty or sixty age group.
I dont care if its a bit off (I've got some wonderful Product Enterprise ones for ogling) . Its Stingray, and it shoots torpedoes yaaaay! Just wish they would bring out a decent sized terror fish to go with it!
Prototype looks fine to me, but it’s all about the paint job! I think we should start a petition to put Scoop in charge of the painting - we certainly know HE can do it! SFZ

ReplyDeleteHa,ha! It's kind of you to say so, Zigg, but I think we'd best see what Corgi comes up with. ;D
