Last night held a grand discovery for me. BBC iPlayer have all episodes of Dr. Who available to watch online.
I took the opportunity, after what, 54 years, to re-watch one of my favourite episodes with 'my' Doctor John Pertwee, namely the Sea Devils.
It didn't disappoint. Everything I remember was there; the sea fort, UNIT, the Master and those Sea Devils themselves.
I loved the origin of the Devils in the first episode, which I'd forgotten, that the lizardy fellas were a race, who once inhabited the Earth and fancied another shot at it.
I'd also forgotten how effective the electronic music and sound effects were. The BBC Radiophonics team were amazing. It carries the whole action along and adds tons to the creepy atmosphere those old episodes had in spades.
I'm looking forward to watching the whole series of the Sea Devils on iPlayer.
Did you like the Sea Devils?
Are you watching Dr. Who on iPlayer?
Got all of classic who (that exists so far), on dvd. Don't bother with I player very much at all. Not permanent enough for me!
ReplyDeleteI only recall a few episodes Kev. It's those I'm rewatching. Must be a lot of dvds.
DeleteJust counted, it's 150 so far!

Interesting that. Hopefully a deal will be agreed one day.
ReplyDeleteBlimey, wonder if he's got Macca's missing Hofner too!
ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure to meet the composer of the fabulously other worldly music for The Sea Devils, Malcom Clarke, in 1994, when we worked on the same astronomy programme, Heavenly Bodies for the BBC.
ReplyDeleteI asked him about the Sea Devils music, which he did whilst at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and he told me he was into avant guard, atmospheric classical music at the time and wanted to do something similarly different and experimental, electronically, which he certainly did.
When he presented it to the Dr Who production team, they didn't know what to make of it, but ran with it as it was so unlike anything they had heard before and they figured if you couldn't try something wierd like this for Dr Who, then when else could you risk it ?
The result ... one of the most dynamic and innovative music soundtracks ever written for TV.
A work of true genius.
