Like Mego, Mattel are dusting off the moulds of old brands and re-releasing them into the world.
Mattel's characters getting a second wind, I understand, are Pulsar, Big Jim and Matt Mason, with the marketing splash, Back in Action!
I can't confirm that these are in production as this maybe old info from last year I'm just picking up on. Ominously, the Mattel website has nothing about them.
Anyone seen any of these new re-wildings? Are they out there?
Morning Woodsy,
ReplyDeletethese popped up last July. They were offered at the San Diego Comics Convention apparently, and briefly available on the Mattel website. Labeled as the Secret Wars pack for some reason.
They're only 3" high and have no accessories (not even a helmet for MMM). The assumption is that this was a relatively simple way to maintain trademark rights on these three brands. The few friends I've discussed this with were divided - two of them had or ordered the set, the others weren't interested.

I think they are appalling. Given the totally different styles of each original figure, lumping them all together in this simple Fisher Price style figure is a complete waste of time. Matts detail is simply painted or decalled on, theres no helmet or accessory and articulation is limited. Aside from retaining the TM and copyright, they achieve little. Hasbro did a similar thing with three Micronauts figures a few years ago andvthen the line sank without a trace once more. Its clearly a token exercise and not intended to go any further than a gimmick. Shame Bill
ReplyDeleteThese figures may not be on Mattel's website, but ARE on the 'Mattel Creations UK' website.
ReplyDeleteThey are listed as costing £41.00 (not sure if that's each, or for all three), but also as 'Sold Out'. Therefore they were clearly an actual product, but with a short or limited run, for some reason.
They are horrible, what a waste of time
ReplyDeleteI felt the same about 'new' Action Man.
ReplyDeleteNothing like the original, far too rigid, with neither the mobility, realism or play quality of its forerunner.
These turn up on eBay fairly regularly at prices that put me off taking any interest. I read somewhere that they were intended to gauge interest in a relaunch, but presumably, no-one was bothered. Matt Mason without a helmet seeems particularly pointless!
ReplyDeleteClearly not a popular move by Mattel! I'd love to find an original Pulsar!
