Here is an item on what is perhaps the most frightening flying machine ever invented, the de Lackner DH-5 Aerocycle. Initially known to the US Army as the YHO-2 in the Observation Helicopter series, and then as the HZ-1. Only a few were built for testing. First flown in 1954.
It was basically a set of helicopter rotors, with the pilot standing on a platform mounted above the rotors. I am sure that everyone in the US Army was very happy when this project was cancelled.
