I heard a saying this week I've not heard for a long long time.
To be offered out.
A schoolkid said it to another one.
"You offering me out?"
Basically it means "do you want a fight outside?"
It's an old saying. Schoolkids said it when I was young back in the stone age.Thank God no-one offered me out. I was never a scrapper. Not even with some Kung Fu under my belt. More of a philosopher!
Is it a saying you know?
Never heard it before, W, as far as I know. We usually said "See you at four" when a scrap was in the offing.
ReplyDeleteIs that when school finished Kid?
DeleteThere was a phrase used in South Wales when I was younger - being "fetched a" slap, or something a bit more extreme. Or, "I'll fetch you a" use your imagination on that one!
ReplyDeleteI was once playing Rugby, and one of the little psychos they let loose with studded Rugby boots. Once fetched me a kick in the head! All because he couldn't rip the ball from my hands! I had a headache for a week after that, and lost total interest in all sport too.
The little reject just had a ticking off from the sports master for his trouble.
I wish I'd fetched both a lobotomy at the time!
That's a new one on me too Bill. I like it although I wouldn't want to be fetched a slap! You did well to even try rugby. I never did. I was always put in the bottom team for football practice at school. We were called the Duffers!
DeleteActually, I was selected for the Rugby team, because I am a similar build to the archetypal rugby player, not for my skills. Although I'm five foot eight, not six foot eight.
DeleteI'm also no athlete, and am not built for running. Over the years, I have tried a few sports. Karate was one. My late father taught marshal arts, so it was very likely I'd try it out. I was very good at Chi but not so good at Kata.
In the end it was swimming which was my forte. Those big shoulders proved very useful for things like front crawl and butterfly.
I've got a good story that I'll email you privatly about a hilarious incident that happened at the baths at School!
Don't know any of these, but my dad, who was short but 'hard' and ex wartime Navy, used to say if someone attacked him he'd beat Seven Bells out of them.
ReplyDeleteSome sort of naval frais, I imagine.
Yep, Seven Bells was a phrase when I was growing up too. Seven shades was another one Mish. My Dad was in the Navy in the War. A radio-operator.
DeleteSorry, 'phrase' obviously. Doh !
