I've been thinking about cheaper replacements for Major Mat Mason Parts.
Not that I have any Matt Mason anymore but I adored the Major as a nipper.
Consider the cool Matt helmet with that glorious visor.
Well howzabout Playmobil's Mars astronaut's helmet. OK its too small but darn it, that's the same visor design!
And what about Matt's wonderful little chrome tools like those binoculars.
Well, Playmobil have some Mars bins ready to go too!
Larger items are trickier and may need some proper upcycling to replace them. Take the Recono-Jet, that neat zip-line sled.
Well, you could always repurpose an old hairdryer like this Moulinex Jet.
and a base from an old calculator maybe.
The classic Moulinex drier gives further possibilities.
The fab MMM Space Bubble, the Major's posin' globe, could be made from a variety of clear spheres.
Here's some Amazon. Or maybe even find an old Ferrero Rocher gift ball.
The white frame is a lot harder. I was thinking of a toy wheelbarrow frame?
What do you think?
Have you got any more Major upcycling ideas readers? The wackier the better!
No-one replaces the Captain's parts with tat.
ReplyDeleteHaha I used to autograph using your moniker back in my band day's, " I can't seem to focus my beam! Best wishes, Captain Lazer"
DeleteHa ha, like it MJ! I bet no instrument could create that sound that the captain's back pack made when you pressed the big silver button! brrrd-de-de-de-de-der!
DeleteI used to re-purpose Little Big Man accessories for Major Matt. There were some neat walkie talkies in chrome that worked well with Matt.
ReplyDeleteLittle Big Man and the Major! Major Matt Big Man! ha ha, I imagine it was impossible to dress the Major in Little Big's clothes, what with all that friction from those rubber limbs!
DeleteOh it must be 25+ years ago there was a fellow who published a soft cover book on Major Matt Mason and he was also making high quality replacement visors in pressure cast resin, along with replacement copies of weapons and helmet accessories for Outer Space Men (a line very complimentary to Major Matt). Of course I can’t remember a name and I’ve carelessly lost track of the book.
ReplyDeleteFound it on eBay: SPACE TOYS OF THE 60'S: MAJOR MATT MASON, MIGHY ZEROID Robots & OUTER SPACE MEN By James H. Gillam
DeleteI have that very book Charles signed by Mr. Gillam as well! A great volume, which also covers my fave space figures from my childhood, Colourforms Outer Space Men!
DeleteUnfortunately for a man with a 3D printer, every problem starts to look digital! I was mortified as a child when I lost Major Matt's moon suit screw driver in our parent's grass coir matting. When we left for Australia, I searched carefully for it when the carpet was pulled up, but to no avail. These days I can model a new one and paint it with a pretty good approximation of vacuum metallizing, but sadly the rest of the suit has not fared well over the years!
ReplyDeleteI'm now using that psyche-scarring trauma as inspiration in my ongoing Art Toy adventures!
