I've often wondered if there is such a thing as Thunderbirds blue?
Here's the Wombat on the rolling road. Its a quite wonderful blue shade.
Not as good a picture but here's Zero-X again in a beautiful blue colour.
Its very hard to tell but would you say they are the same blue that the modelmakers at century 21 used for both?
The right blue for Zero X is, apparently, a topic in itself. I've never found out what it is. I once heard that the paint on the main body nosewheel doors (a standalone prop which survives) is similar to the Dinky SPV. The closest I could find to that was Zircon blue metallic, the same colour as my old Austin Maestro!
ReplyDeleteInteresting Kev, thanks. Zircon Blue eh. What colour would you say the plastic C21 Zero X is, the same?
DeleteThe toy is much darker. Things look so different on screen to the colours they really are, it is very tricky to get them right when you're making replicas!
DeleteI would say metallic azure-blue? or metallic blue-grey! Adding white to the old Humbrol metallic blue should get something close.

Cheers Hugh. Metallic Azure Blue. Its hard to pin down exactly isn't it. I wonder if the C21 studio team had a big pot of it always on hand for touching up!
DeleteI recall reading that Martin Bower said Zero-X was Kingfisher Blue.
ReplyDeleteKingfisher Blue! Thanks a lot Bill, fascinating.
