I came across the work of the illustrator Basil Wolverton today. Grotesque faces and horrible heads. Really startling cartoon people.
As soon as I saw them I thought of two sets of stickers I had as a kid as I'm sure some of you had as well. Ugly Stickers in particular and Nutty Initials.
Does anyone know if these designs were created by Basil Wolverton?
If they're not Basil Wolverton they're a very good imitation.
ReplyDeleteYes, I thought they might be Basil.
DeleteI'm not 100% sure if the stickers were painted by Norm Saunders, but he certainly painted the Wacky Packages that came with them! Saunders is famous for countless Men's magazine illustrations and most notably, the Mars Attacks cards...
ReplyDeleteLooked these stickers up, the Ugly ones. Turns out they were designed by Basil Wolveraton AND Painted by Norman Saunders! Not sure about Nutty Initials.
ReplyDeleteThey are! The nutty initials (1967) are by Basil Wolverton and Norm Saunders. The ugly stickers (1965) were by a number of diff artists - I know Basil did “Jeff” and an artist named Wally Wood did “Melvin”.
ReplyDeleteThanks Anon. great info!
