what a combination! Edward Curtis series of phenomenal Native American portraits and Star Wars, two of my favourite things. Lucas based a lot of the references in Star Wars on anthropological themes, using the great Joseph Campbell as consultant on the mythological references. I wonder if the hopi girls hair directly influenced Princess Leia's do? https://scalar.usc.edu/works/performingarchive/visualizing-the-vanishing-race-10-11
I find it hard to imagine Native Americans being photographed. The Wild West is so far back in time in my mind that it can't be. But I know it is. Just like the last of Japan's Samurai were photographed. Sad and important. As for Leia's hair I like that article. There's some amazing pictures of Hopi women with double buns here too https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-38452953
