Good guess, but these puppies are actually inspired by a Patrick Woodroffe cover for Joe Haldeman's The Forever War. The horseshoe shaped structures on the upper deck are the giveaway!
I love Patrick Woodroffe. My Dad got me his Mythopeikan book Xmas 1977 and I've loved his art ever since. I didn't recognise this box art at Woodroffe though!
I think board games might be another genre - like model kits and some science books - where the mouth-watering cover illustrations were often much “sexier” than the interior contents. And why these illustrations, in and of themselves, have become so cherished and collectible.
Imperial Destroyers if they were designed by Chris Foss
ReplyDeleteYeah, I thought of Chriss Foss Brian. Nice one.
