BBC iplayer has put up for viewing the new series of Battlestar Galactica.
While I suspect most people will be familiar with it already, I had only come across it in passing, and so tried to watch it.
I found it a confusing mix of sex, spaceships and pessimism (with gung-ho US Marine-style characters thrown in) and ended up skimming through two episodes then giving up. Be interested to know what others thought of it.
In the meantime, going to cheer myself up with a couple of episodes of "Stingray"!

I thought the rebooted Galactica was an excellent series, great characters and intriguing plotlines. It did go on too long, I felt and the resolution of some plot strands was unsatisfying but that's always going to be the case.
ReplyDeleteAndy, you made it through one and a half more episodes than me. It might have been an interesting series if original but was a poor reboot of the 70's show which had fun Cylons and scripts and plots very similar to Wagon Train in the 50's.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Troy Tempest was a better actor than anyone on Battlestar Galactica.
ReplyDeleteI never thought much of the 70s/80s series, it was too childish and corny, but watched the introductory double episode of the reboot anyway.
ReplyDeleteI could see it was grittier and more adult, but, ultimately, I just didn't care enough to watch any more, so packed it in at that point.

I thought it was brilliant! For me, it was the extension of the adult UFO style sci do drama. The fact that it had continuity and things changed over the story arc was a revelation for someone brought up on Star Trek TOS.
ReplyDeleteEven if you can't stomach the full series, I would recommend watching the stand alone "Razor" movie as it delivers all the new BSG vibe in a single sitting! There are also bonus webisodes that feature the classic chrome "Toasters" for anyone who really misses them from the original series!
Sadly the follow up to BSG was Caprica which had NO redeeming characters at all and was a chore to watch!
Couldn't agree more, BSG was the most intelligent sci-fi series of its time, characters were believable and story arcs compelling, the payoff not only paid tribute to the original series but settled the conflict with a satisfying conclusion that warns of possible mistakes to come in our future - MJ Southcoast base
