Hi Woodsy,
Further to the earlier post about the Brooke Bond PG Tips chimp bump and go racing cars. This set of six plastic toys never made it to NZ. Each of the cars was driven by a chimp (was this the same vehicle in each case, just in a different colour ?).
However, there have been a number of diecast PG Tips or Brooke Bond models over the years. Several were small red delivery vans, made by Dinky and Matchbox in the 1950s, and later by others as well.
This set of four models was released by the British company Lledo in the 1990s (the box has a copyright date of 1996). The boxes are in the same green and white colours as boxes of PG Tips tea and teabags, with an oval picture of an Indian lady picking tea. The front of the box says PG Chimps Die-cast Model Collection.
The back of the box describes the Tipps family, and states that the advertisements have been delighting audiences for 40 years (in the 1990s), and that it is the longest running series of commercials on British television.
It is also stated that 'Many famous celebrities have provided the voices like Cilla Black, Bruce Forsyth, Peter Sellers, Bob Monkhouse, Sue Pollard, and many more'.

The racing cars were the same just different colours but the chimps were the different characters as named on the packaging.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed it was the longest running TV ad campaign, although I do clearly recall it being on the telly. I don't think they'd use chimps now. Thanks for sharing Paul, a great collection and well-kept!
