It's nice to have a pleasant surprise this week in particular but I did.
I've been racking my brains for years about strange plastic figures I remember having back in the Sixties.
They were dead simple and sort of incomplete. Like bad clones from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I had thought that they might have been cheapo monsters like Frankenstein: a green plastic Frankenstein rings a bell actually.
BUT I think I have it now for the other plain bodies.
The strange unfinished figures look like these I saw on old auctions on Worthpoint.
I was flabbergasted!
Yes, these are what I assume must be outfit stuffers for Action Man/ GI Joe gear.
The bodies are headless and limbless.
This Deep Sea Diver outfit has a pair of plastic sleeve stuffing arms too.
Yep, these are the odd figures I had too. They must have come in my Action Man stuff.
A form of packaging!
Here's the green version along with more Deep Diver gear.
Maybe it was only the Diver set that contained these bodies?
Anyone know?
Do you remember them readers?
Did they have a name?
Yup, I remember these costume fillers. I assume they came only with outfits that required 'filling' for optimal display purposes, like the deep sea diving suit, etc.
ReplyDeleteThey were indeed costume fillers, Kid. These hollow mannequins came with the 1st issue deep sea diver, astronaut and red devil parachutist. In fact I have a bitter memory of the plastic mannequin! My very first Action Man outfit was the deep sea diver. My well-meaning but unsuspecting parents assumed that an Action Man figure was included inside the suit when they bought it as a Christmas prezzie. I remember eagerly decarding the outfit only to have it literally fall apart in my young horrified hands. 'Gutted' doesn't describe it! I was given a Combat Johnnie substitute the following week. He fared worse than the mannequin. I had to wait another few months until my birthday before I finally got a genuine Action Man. A very troubled intro into the world of action figure toys :)
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. Didn't the suit box say that the figure wasn't included?
DeleteIt did, Kid - bottom right corner beneath contents list. I suspect my parents missed the small print... sadly something I've done myself on the odd occasion, typically when buying on ebay :)
ReplyDeleteI feel it too tone. xmas palitoy anguish.
