I'm not entirely sure what to make of abandoned house visits.
It's probably an ancient human calling and has been going on for centuries I bet.

It seems like trespassing though.
I am nevertheless fascinated by it which is odd.
I've even reported on an abandoned home near Moonbase - the Doctor's House, but the backstory was really quite tragic, as no doubt many of these places are.
Here's a clip of some young people on You Tube walking through an abandoned house full of old books and board games. What do you make of this pastime readers?
It seems likely that the householder has either died or been taken into care, but it's a mystery as to why his or her house has been left abandoned for what looks like some time. I think if I discovered a house like that, I'd probably take a look, but try and secure it before leaving - without, of course, taking anything with me.
ReplyDeleteI think the backstories of such abandoned homes will be bad Kid. Maybe sudden death, maybe old age, maybe a family rift or maybe a terrible tragedy. The house down the road from Moonbase is just such a one involving a murder and a death threat. Here's a link to, sorry, a Newspaper as it was in the National press in 2013. I say sorry because I can't stand newspapers' websites. They clog up with pop-ups and banners and drive me insane! https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2490033/Who-live-gothic-manor-like-Mysterious-abandoned-doctors-house-vintage-cars-garage-yellowing-copies-Which-Car-magazine-littering-halls-swimming-pool-covered-moss.html

ReplyDeleteA year or two back, I worked with a lady who in her spare time was a keen photographer and seasoned urban explorer, Woodsy. She loved the past and was very respectful towards the places she accessed and explored. Genuine urban explorers have an ethic where they take only photographs (or film footage) and leave only footprints. I find these youtube films fascinating if the film makers show respect towards the homes they explore and empathy towards the people who once lived there. Films like this raise a lot of questions - what sort of event removed a family under sudden circunstances, whilst a lifetime of personal possessions and family artifacts are left behind?
ReplyDeleteyes Tone, I think such abandonment must have sadness and desolation at their heart. How could it happen? Imagine our homes left to the elements with all our vintage toys gathering moss! A sobering thought especially in these frightening times. I like the ethic of leaving only footprints. A bit like an astronaut.
DeleteYou make a valid point regarding our own homes abandoned and left to the elements with all our vintage toys gathering moss. A poignant point which wasn't wasted on me as I watched the film.
DeleteAnother unusual and captivating find for the blog, Woodsy :)
UrbEx or urban exploration, as Tony says, extremely popular. There are a couple of websites that I look at quite often: https://www.28dayslater.co.uk/ and Subterannea Brittanica. Both have thousands of reports on the history of obscure places, like disused railways, tunnels, cold war era bunkers and unfortunately, personal residences. I find it all intensely fascinating and many years ago, had the opportunity to visit a dilapidated farm nearby in Croston. It was almost entirely overgrown, but the basic structure could still be made out. Ive got some really low res photographs somewhere - on floppy disk!
ReplyDeleteIsn't there a Freeview programme called Abandoned Engineering? Do you watch that Wote?
ReplyDeleteYes Abandoned Engineering is one of those overly sensationalised programmes that uncover fabricated nonesense stories behind perfectly logical reason. Bit like Ancient Aliens and God Was an Astronaut. All show and no go
