I recently saw a Matey in a Chemists.
Its that plastic bulbous blue bottle of bubble bath that's been around the seven seas since I was a mucky pup!
I remember the sailor Matey from way back when Billy Blastoff's diver shared a bath with me but I can't recall any other. Was there more than the sailor? A soldier? An astronaut?
I think Universal's Monsters made it into the baths of America under the name of Soaky. I would have loved those.
Do you remember Matey or Soaky? Is it a worldwide bubble bath phenomenon?
Universal Monster Soaky bottles from the 60s are always a hot collectible.I have a Creature from the Black Lagoon bottle in storage somewhere here.I heard they are being re released in figurine form, possibly by Super Seven or maybe Funko(not sure).I will have to research that
ReplyDeleteI reckon you have just about everything stashed away Bri! I can imagine the Creature Soaky being a must have for monster fans. Have you got the Penn Plax Creature or the Creature head PEZ too???
DeleteNot exactly worldwide. Matey started in the USA circa 1960, got to England a few years later, but before 1970 had abandoned the US market to Mr. Bubble. Soaky stopped being made shortly after a child in India died after aspirating some bath water; must've been a coincidence, a rupture of a congenital brain aneurysm, but they sued and Colgate must've gotten spooked by it.
ReplyDeleteGreat info Robert, fascinating. Thanks!
