My favourite tree decoration is back in its rightful place on the tree.
A big clunky plastic red toy box complete with miniature tree and teddy
I know that plastic is frowned upon these days, with its impact on the environment, but this has been in the family for about 25 years so I class it as a form of re-use - every Christmas.
I love it.
What's your fave Xmas decoration?
As a small nipper, our son, now 33, toppled the delicate Christmas tree fairy/angel and replaced it with his Spider Man action figure. Our lad has long since moved out, but even today we still crown the tree with his old Spider Man toy, Woodsy. Guess this untraditional tree topper has become a festive family fave for us :)
ReplyDeleteOh Wow Tone, a Spider Tree Topper! Old Spidy likes the heights and he can decorate the tree with his web slingin! ha ha. Send us a snap of this most Marveltastic decoration with a long history. Just thought, the old Remco energised Spiderman could even hoist himself up the tree and when done lower himself down! ha ha
DeleteToo many to mention, but some of them are a couple of cardboard Santas cut from selection boxes back around 1968, one of the original tree lights from the late '50s, early '60s (it still works, but is hung merely as an ornament), and a little Santa cake topper I got back around 1977. It was a replacement for one the exact same I'd first acquired around 1972. Funny how that five year interval seemed a huge gulf at the time, as I'd gone from being a schoolboy to a 'working man'. There's loads of others, but that'll do for now.
ReplyDeleteFabulous memories Kid. So many special tree decs. Its amazing that youve managed to keep those cardboard Santas. I recaLL lots of cool stuff like that on the back of Selection boxes. I wonder what your favourite Santa cake topper actually looks like? Send us a pic if you want Kid.
DeleteThe cardboard Santas survived because, unknown to me, my mother had kept them after I'd cut them out. She was putting up the tree in 1972 or '73, and I heard her say "Oh, I'll put these on it!" after digging them out from wherever she kept the decorations. There's a post about them on my blog - 'A Tale Of Two Santas...', and the cake topper can be seen on 'Santa Claus Came To Town - And Stayed...' Take a wee look.
ReplyDeleteI have. Great tales Kid. And the comment by one of your readers in 2013 about Ladybird dressing gowns brought a flood of happy memories for me. I'm sure I have an annual with a ladybird strip/ad in it!
DeleteThanks for commenting on them. I may repost my Seasonal pieces, because not everyone will have read them - and those that did at the time may well have forgotten them. Talking of dressing gowns, I used to have a deep red one when I was a kid, right up to when I was about 14. It was a tight squeeze by then and probably only reached my thighs, but I still wore it after a bath. It had a little felt teddy stitched to the pocket, and when it came time for the dressing gown to be dispensed with (not my decision), I undid the stitches around Ted and kept him. Still got 'im to this day.
DeleteYeah, re-post, Its Xmas! There's not many comments around as its December but I enjoy festive posts Kid. I reckon you do too! Kust listening to Dean Martin singin Winter Wonderland, I'm sure he's sozzled! As for dressing gowns I do recall the lovely comfy feeling, which was alas short lived once I got under my tortuous nylon sheets in the Sixties!
DeleteIs there a post about your felt Teddy?
DeleteNo - but there will be before too long (hopefully).
