As a matter of fact Woodsy, the Finnish word for autumn is syksy. Ruska means that autumnal show of nature when leaves turn from green into bright reds, yellows and oranges. In a way, for us Finns ruska is the very essence of autumn, so you got it right bullseye!
Thanks for asking Woodsy, the other three seasons are as follows: talvi (winter), kevät (spring), and kesä (summer). In my childhood, we had four very distinct times of year, but with the climate change it all has become a bit blurred. I for one would not mind proper, sharp cold winters for example.
Beautiful names Arto. I agree, The seasons are adjusting. Its a sobering thought that we are in the warm period of an ice age, the interglacial pause in the Holocene.I wonder when the ice will be back. Will it ever come back?
It looks cold outside and very cosy inside... get the kettle on and let us in, Woodsy :D
ReplyDeleteYep, the kettle's on and doors unlocked Tone .... but not for long! Bring a tea bag.
DeleteHee hee Woodsy, ruska indeed, there in the piccy with reddening leaves. Very beautiful time of year we're witnessing right now.
ReplyDeleteRuska is the name of Autumn in Finnish isn't it Arto? Its a lovely word. Does rus mean brown as in the English rust and russet?

ReplyDeleteI like Syksy as well Arto! It has a real ring to it! So what are the other 3 seasons in Finland? Or do you have more than four?
