Hello Woodsy,
Further to the Paddington Blog a while back and mention of Sooty
Last August we visited Blackpool, the origin of Sooty being here where Harry Corbett the creator of the charactor was given his first puppet.
We took the ferry from Fleetwood, the end of the tram line, across The Wyre to Knott End where I saw the pictured Mercedes. Possibly the car of Corbett's son Matthew who had continued the act?
The blurred shot from a moving tram shows part of the Blackpool Illuminations, Sooty & Sweep.

You do get around Terran consoidering you live in New York! Blackppol! Fleetwood! Coastal metropoles of my Lancashire childhood! What about Heysham Head?
ReplyDeleteMust be keen on Sooty to have a reg like that. Hmm. Yes, maybe a Corbett. I once sold a Sooty glove puppet to an Ebayer called I Am The Real Sooty! I thought that was a Corbett too.
Ok so my daughter is a super fan of Sooty and so by default we are as parents, the above-mentioned car is more likely to be owned by Richard Carell as he is the owner and presenter of Sooty currently, Matthew Corbett is very firmly retired from Sooty and has almost in tribute deliberately distanced himself from the little yellow bear as to not create confusion regarding Sooty and it's current TV show which should be starting a new series on CITV very shortly- Mark J
ReplyDeleteI'm delighted to hear that Sooty still entertains children. When I saw the illuminated signs I thought Blackpool Corporation just had a long memory, nice to know it's current. I had both Sooty and a Prudence Kitten glove puppets back in the early 50's. I think they were made by Chad Valley. Do children still have such simple toys?
ReplyDeleteI saw Sooty live last year, the merchandise sold in the foyer was selling like hot cakes! Mostly glove puppets and some light-up magic wands! None of it is expensive,or trashy, every decision made by the Sooty brand is discussed over the breakfast table, including ideas for the TV show or live shows, keeping the whole thing a family run business is essential to Sooty, the love for the little yellow bear is obvious when you see Sooty live or on TV, go on YouTube to find the shows, my fave was always Harry Corbett, my wife grew up watching Matthew Corbett and my daughter watches Richard Carell( live shows are a riot with Richard) - Mark J
DeleteI had no idea it had such longevity Mark! Amazing! He should be back o the telly!
DeleteFirstly it's the Damn predicted text rules again!! The current presenter of Sooty is RICHARD CADELL!!! And secondly Sooty has a new series starting tomorrow on itvbe at 9.15am!! Yay!!- Mark J
DeleteMy Missus has been playing with glove puppets with our Grandson this morning. She's European so puppetry is in her blood. Remember all those amazing Czech puppet shows on TV back in the Sixties and Seventies?
ReplyDeleteNot only puppet shows. There was at least one German western with very Teutonic indians running through pine forrests (along the Rhine not north America and a delightful live action film of a boy age around eight who plays in a small 2 seat helicopter and accidently atarts then flys away in it.
ReplyDeleteYep, Germany was/ is nuts about Westerns. There's a whole action figure line based on their classic Marl May books that we never got in the UK I don't think. The helicopter kid is intriguing. I'll ask the Missus.
