Years ago on holiday I read The Sucking Pit by schlockmeister Guy N. Smith.
I left the book for someone else, much to the villa owner's annoyance, as it didn't sit well at all with the Balzac and Hemingway already on the shelf.
A long-time collector of horror novels I remember the book vividly and went in search of my own pit.
The journey began with what appeared to be a dissolving ox
but we were cheered on by shy Bluebells
Next we came across a soft doughball of fungus .... but no sign of a bog
Even the faces in the gnarled gall said nothing of the pit
Even Blue Boy was despairing
when he suddenly picked up the scent!
and there in the trees
shrouded by dryads
was my own sucking pit!
I wish I still had the book!
Do you collect books like horror novels or another genre perhaps?
Here's another watery horror novel by Mr.Smith."Water Rites" concerns a cult and a killer mermaid that lives in a small town reservoir.Give it a try!
