When I was a kid in the Sixties we always had a hot evening meal around 5pm.
I was always starving after a late afternoon play with toys or playing out after Skool, which finished around 3pm.
This evening meal was called Tea in Northern England. This would have been potatoes of some species, hot meat of some cut and veg of some hue of green. Oh and yep, bisto gravy.
Me and the Missus still like a big Tea in the evening, usually about 7pm when most things are done and dusted.
But sometimes I like a simple snack instead, something like a poached egg on toast or cheesy beans on toast. In fact anything on toast!
Do you ever snack at night readers?
We both out in the day, so our main meal is in the evening, Woodsy. Around here we've always known it as Tea (not to be confused with the great British cuppa though). Wonder how the last meal of the day became known as Tea or Teatime? Perhaps the proper name is supper? Either way, I always look forward to it :)
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting Tone. Same here, Tea is the evening meal, dinner is lunch and supper never really existed for me as a kid. I often have a of cereals late at night so I suppose that's supper. In posher areas of the UK lunch is lunch, dinner is the evening meal and supper appears to be a late dinner had later on. Breakfast appears to be breakfast everywhere across Britain. Oh, its time for my bowl of frosties now!
DeleteJust to be a perverse uprooted Londoner, Breakfast is the morning meal. The modern version being cold cereal the older being the Full English Breakfast involving cooked meats.
ReplyDeleteElevenses at 11 am would be tea and biscuits.
If not the main meal of the day, Lunch was next. If the midday meal was the main meal it would be Dinner.
Around four o'clock it would be Tea Time. This could be tea and biscuits or the more formal Cream Tea involving sandwiches, scones, jams and cream.
If the main meal of the day is at night it's Dinner, otherwise it's Supper.
In the USA at weekends meals can be combined, breakfast and lunch become Brunch.
My daughter had suggested that a very late lunch in place of Dinner should be called Linner which would be the equivalent of your North British Tea.
Does that clarify anything?
