Do you think our Parents would have shopped online if they could have back in the day?
Imagine, we would have got all our Project SWORD, SpaceX. Major Matt Mason and Billy Blastoff toys delivered by the postman and couriers like Hermes and DHL.
Would this have changed the way we were with our toys if the experience of visiting a toy shop was erased?
What do you think?
To this day I have to hear my mother complain about Christmas 1976 when I asked for Micronauts and they couldn't be had in any local store. There was catalogs that you could send an order by telephone, but they were sold out early. My mom and dad drove to Pennsylvania and eventually found Micronauts.I keep telling her that I actually still have them all and their value is considerable,so all their effort was worthwhile. They really were great parents:)That being said, online shopping probably would have been very elpful.
ReplyDeleteWow! the last Micronauts in the State! Reminds me of the film Jingle all The way Brian! Yes, catalogues were the internet of the day weren't they. I forgot that you could phone them up! I remember Mum writing out long order forms and posting them off or giving them an agent.
DeleteElpful? 'Elpful sir, very 'elpful ;p Missed a key.
ReplyDeleteelpful, elpful! You turned Cockney Brian!
DeleteThe thing I miss from shops, of whatever kind, is the serendipitous discovery of things I didn't know existed. That exploration of aisles of product. Internet shopping can't match it, but it does provide new avenues for running across new/old things... such as blogs. I'd never heard of Project Sword before I read your posts.
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas to ya!
The stores in my area had so much cool space stuff, for a short time, I had more than enough to choose from - and more then my meager budget would allow! But I would occasionally order stuff through mail order catalogues. One of the coolest was a Quercetti flying Fireball XL5 toy, $2 with shipping! My biggest problem was there was so much stuff at stores I couldn't buy it all. I remember once putting down a remote control Captain Scarlet SPV toy at E J Korvette because I didn't have the cash that day. Never ever saw it again.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the Bandai SPV Zigg. Wow! I borrowed one a couple of years ago i think. It had to stay on its bubble card alas! Yep, thats cash. Never enough when you need it! Have you still got your Quercetti XL5?
