One area of Andersonising that I have never really got into is collecting the various DVD formats of the Anderson TV series and films. This is odd as I'm an avid VHS video collector but for some reason I've never made the leap to an interest in DVD, As a consequence DVD improvements such as HD and Blu-Ray have so far passed me by as well.
However, I'm aware from my VHS collection that the picture and audio quality, duration, country of release etc can matter a great deal and whole collections can be built around acquiring the various different versions. With advances in DVD technology this is probably even more important for DVD collectors particularly when box sets are produced in different countries like the recent 7 - disc Blu Ray package from Japan.
This got me thinking as to what is currentkly available for Thunderbirds Are Go. I've got lots of Thunderbirds VHS including the movie but is there a DVD package with lots of doumentaries and extras? The only UK version I could, on Amazon, below, find looks rather lacklustre in terms of extras

Is there a really good DVD version of Thunderbirds Are Go with tons of extras about Zero X thrown in?
What is disapointing is that there has not been a version which includes the footage removed for timing purposes, which accounts for something like an extra fifteen or twenty minutes!
ReplyDeleteApart from the odd photo it is a shame that all the deleted scenes seem to be lost. There was supposed to be a scene featuring Fireflash and shots of the lifting bodies taking off to join Zero X on its return.
DeleteI suppose in those days there didn't see the need to save stuff not like today were DVD's have different endings, deleted scenes and interviews with everyone including the cleaners!
My DVDs of Thunderbirds are Go and Thunderbird 6 include commentry by Sylvia Anderson and David Lane and short interviews with them. I'm not aware of any behind the scenes stuff from the movies. I think these have been reissued several times.
ReplyDeleteI may have to get that one Yorkie. The new Prometheus DVD looks the business, with alternate endings and stuff. One for the Xmas list!
ReplyDeleteI discussed this in another forum some time ago, and one reply said the cuttings still exist. In addition to what was mentioned above; there were scenes at the Hoods Temple, Jeff Tracy appearing on TV and Kyranos' only appearence deleted too. Generally, it was suggested that the cut scenes would have added more detail to the story.
ReplyDeleteSo here is a question... Are these scenes included in the Thunderbords are Go Novel?
I really hope they do still exist, Bill.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good question re the novel. I 've got the paperback tucked away somewhere. I'm gonna have to dig it out and give it a read.
Ive got a copy of the novel too somewhere. Its funny but me and Mike were just discussing the missing bits from the film last night! It would be amazing to find they still existed somewhere in the United Artists archives!
ReplyDeleteFrom further investigation it appeas that no copies of the deleted scenes are known to survive. The only remaining film footage was edited into the Joe 90 episode "International Concerto", which includes a few seconds of video from the Trans American TV Network sequence. There is also a piece of restored cut footage on youtube here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqsMnJ8RTbA
ReplyDeleteFascinating Bill, great detective work! I enjoyed watching the restored outtake about the Glanfield [sic] map on Ypu Tube. Mr.Jim has done a great job. I shlall check out the Joe 90 episode next. There's something compulsive about lost film footage isn't there!
