Space art provided rich pickings for toy box and header card illustrations. Some of the best space art was by Robert McCall of the USA. His work found its way onto two large Project SWORD toy boxes, the Cape Kennedy Set and Nuclear Ferry.
But it wasn't just SWORD. McCall's art graced many toys and this week I found another example, the Space Water Gun [above, Mark Bergin Toys]. The somewhat murky picture shows a scene inspired by McCall's astronaut and domes painting as it appeared in LIFE magazine in the Sixties [below]. Has anyone got this space gun or does anyone know of any other McCall - inspired covers for toys, LP's, Jigsaws, paperbacks and so on?
