Small Change for Mankind: Shell Man In Flight Coins
Blog Reader Stephen Palmer has sent in this fabulous shot of his 1969 Shell Man in Flight coin set. Ah, the memories and I didn't even drive [I was only 8!]!
Wow, what memories! I was 7 in 69 and think I got about 9 of those coins before they suddenly disappeared in our local garage where mum filled the Hillman Imp!
I certainly remember having those coins in Holland. However, I'm pretty sure mine were in yellow metal. And I seem to recall at least one more coin with the first Heinkel jet plane, and that they were issued by Shell. Where a quick google confirms that this memory at least has been left intact by approaching senility. :) http://jeugdsentimenten.net/2007/08/13/ruimte-avontuur/ (In Dutch, sorry, try your favourite translation engine)
Hey Paul, just checked out that cool Dutch site. We woz robbed here in the UK! You got an extra 4 coins in Holland! Short changed at the pump!
I remember burying some of my duplicates in our garden along with spanish pasetas and other bits. A sort of 'time box'. I dug it up years later and the esso coins and pasetas had rotted! Not a good investment! Did anyone else bury stuff or was I just wierd? [I blame Blue Peter!]
Just had another google, and the UK issue was also by Shell apparently. Quite a few sets on epay btw http://coins.shop.ebay.co.uk/Coins-/58520/i.html?_nkw=shell where the prices suggest Wotan got a good deal on those boots!
