I read this book about twenty years ago! Brian Aldiss is one of my all-time favorite short story writers, but these are from early in his career and I prefer his later work.
This particular collection takes a set of independent stories with different future settings and characters and adds connective material to create the impression of it being one continuous narrative. I've always been keen on writers doing multiple stories within a common "universe" so this slightly different approach piqued my curiosity. My recollection is that it didn't quite work here, but a noble effort.
