Zero Scratch: Kevin D's Cabinet Treasure

Hi Woodsy,

Since it is a ZeroX day, I just took this shot of the scratchbuild that I did many many years ago. I never got around to the lifting bodies. I suspect I will start afresh with a new one someday. Sorry the picture is not great, but it would be tricky to get it out of its cabinet without major moving of stuff. My model room is in need of a serious makeover!

ZERO-X By Aoshima and other Friends by Mike B

Woodsy - Regarding your post on the comparisons between the two Aoshima Zero X. I’ve got them both and the main differences are as Wote and Kevin pointed out, the slightly different colours and the lettering on the side.

The Thunderbird version has a Rock Snake while the Scarlet version has a poster [pictured below].

 

 

The Thunderbird MEV version has a retractable gun on the top, while the Scarlet version does not.

Yorkie was also spot on when he mentioned that a lifting body featured in a XL5 story – note only three engines on one side. 

Another TV21 strip called ‘Front Page’, drawn by John M. Burns briefly featured Captain Black’s Zero X landing at Glenn Field.

If your'e favourite space toy vehicle, not your most pristine, went for an MOT [road worthiness check here in the UK] would it pass or fail? What would it fail on? Lights? Steering? Bodywork? or is it a write-off!

I suppose collectors' terms like near mint and mint indicate condition like an MOT does. Is condition the most important aspect for you when collecting your vintage toys or do other factors come into play like provenence, price etc?

ZERO-X 'S RIVAL: SKY SHIP ONE



 

With it's ZERO-X - style C21 blue plastic this Japanese SKY SHIP 1 toy [Bandai?] would sit well in the  Project Sword fleet! And like Zero -X, Sky Ship One was also the star of a Thunderbirds film, THUNDERBIRD 6, although the actual vehicle of the film's title was for me a complete dissapointment and a damp squib, the red and yellow striped bi-plane, which is partly visible on the above box art. Am I alone in this view?

But is Sky Ship One as popular as Zero-X? What do you think of the two films? Is Thunderbird 6 better than Thunderbirds Are Go? If anyone is lucky enough to own this Sky Ship One and the Century 21 Zero-X I'd dearly love to be able to post a family photo on the blog!

 

 

I'm assuming that this and the other fab Japanese Thunderbirds toys we see on the blog were only available in Japan during the Sixties and Seventies? I never knew any kids with toys in Japanese boxes when I was still 'playing out'! Wonder when they first started to flow out of Japan?

IT'S ZERO-X DAY

THE MORINAGA ZERO-X: SNAP HAPPY!

I'm a duff modeller. All fingers and thumbs and zero skill. So it was a godsend when I picked up this snap-together mini-kit by Morinaga from the early 1990's. Morinaga make boxes of candy and chocolate. which contain gifts and premiums. This wonderful little plastic Zero-X was part of their Thunderbirds range. I've been after one for four years, after first discovering it on the Japanese Thunderbirds Museum website [blogged in 2009]. I could have found out about it 13 years before but that's a story for another day!

I've taken pictures of the 'modelling' process, which is simple even by my standards! More a kinder toy than a kit, it is nevertheless a thing of beauty! The only part I've left off are the transfers as I prefer it without.

My two 'action photographs' of the OX show it taking off above a small SPV from the 1990's Captain Scarlet Adventure board game and second, a miniature Moonbus I made myself.
