Barging In

I do like the Rhine. It's full of boats and barges.

Here's some footage of a river barge I took yesterday evening on the bridge in Bonn.

Is there a busy river near you?

Terranova47's Bubble Gum Cards

My early collection of bubble gum cards and similar have been kept in a retail display box from said cards circa 1958.

The cards from this box were collected because the artwork looked to be by Jack Davies or similar artist from MAD Magazine. In looking at the box now I see that the cards were under licence from TOPPS the big card company in the US

Tarzan and Captain Scarlett were from the 60's but the Funny Greetings and Western cards are 50's as was the all British Associated-Rediffusion cards of their TV shows, some British, some US.

Associated-Rediffusion was the first venture of commercial TV providing an alternative to the BBC.

The box was stored in a shoe box inside a trunk.

As a kid I adored primitive man. This display of skulls in Bonn's  Landesmuseum took me right back. Do you like museums?

Neanderthals, Australopithecus, all those fabulous names.

I hadn't realised science had managed to extract the genome of a Neanderthal from a bone. Very Jurassic Park that! Reminds me of the movie Trog!

I think I've managed to find all the stone age books I had as a kid. A couple elude me and as time passes I'm forgetting which they are. Early Man, Primitive Man, I'm unsure.

Did you like prehistoric man readers? Did you have any books as a kid?

Northern Lights

 My Son in Law took this short superb footage and many great shots of the vivid Aurora display over his house in the UK last night. 

It calls to mind the beginning of the old movie Day of the Triffids!

The Voight in my Head

 We breakfasted at Bonn's Voigt bakery this morning, a chain around the city.

It's an unusual name and immediately made me me think of John Voight, the American actor in Midnight Cowboy and Anaconda Among countless others.

I get the impression many Americans have Germanic surnames. Is that right?

Trouble is I always get Voight's face mixed up with John Savage, that other US actor. Even now I'm not sure who was actually the Midnight Cowboy. Are you?

I know Savage starred in the Onion Field, cos I've got it as a big box VHS video, altho' I've never watched it.

Oddly enough I've seen more VHS at German car boots than I ever do in Britain these days, including my beloved big boxes.
